Finding Fish is tricky at best  and fishfinders—or at least the good ones—are supposed to make things easier for you. The Humminbird PiranhaMAX 170 is definitely one of the good ones and it emits a couple of sound waves so that you can detect the depth of the bottom and the location of structures. Of course, it detects fish as well.

Features of the Humminbird PiranhaMAX 170 4-Inch Waterproof Fishfinder and Dual-Beam Transducer:

  • The dual beam sonar system of the PiranhaMAX 170 emits beams in 200 and 83 kHz frequencies. The narrow beam allows for great bottom definition over a 20-degree angle,Humminbird PiranhaMAX 170 while the wide beam can locate fish over a wider 60-degree angle area.
  • The 170 display is much more advanced than the 150. The gray scale is in 8 levels instead of 4, and the 260 x 160 pixel resolution is much sharper. Like other PiranhaMAX models, direct sunlight does not hinder your ability to see the display.
  • It comes with a back light and a water temperature gauge.
  • It’s waterproof.
  • The Fish ID+ technology allows you to assess sonar returns so that it can identify fish. The intensity of the return is analyzed so that the relative size of the fish can be determined.
  •  The alarm comes with programmable options. It can sound an alarm when the depth reaches what you have specified, and also when the system detects fish. You don’t have to be on full alert every minute.
  • Out of the box: It comes with Mounting Bracket, Transom Mount Transducer, Installation Hardware/Cables, and an Owner’s Manual.

Pros and Cons
Like other PiranhaMAX models, the Humminbird PiranhaMAX 170 4-Inch Waterproof Fishfinder and Dual-Beam Transducer comes with several nice advantages, although the 170 comes with some advanced features as well.

  1. The dual beam allows for greater versatility in use. Fish in both freshwater and saltwater locations become much easier because of the dual beam technology. It also provides more accurate depth readings and improves your chances of finding fish.
  2.  The display is much clearer due to the improvements over the 150. It’s much more attractive as well.
  3. It’s very easy to configure and use. You have options so that you can program it, and it’s actually easier than it sounds.

As for its disadvantages, most people who bother to complain simply wish the display were in color.

Conclusion:
The Humminbird PiranhaMAX 170 is only $20 more expensive than the PiranhaMAX 150 and yet the improvements are surprisingly worth more than the additional expense. The addition of another beam makes it even more useful, and the improvement in the display is an unexpected bonus. Chipping in the extra $20 may be worth it, especially for fishermen who like to frequent both fresh and saltwater locations.
